Mass Produced Object : Research and Development
To start this project I did some online searching for items that peaked my interest and could be mass produced. I found that I'm most interested in items that have a function and that I'm even more interested if they have a relationship with another object.
After looking at hundreds of items I began narrowing my interests. For this project I am interested in designing a product that is well designed yet simple and streamlined. If the product is 3D printed then I would like to design something that requires no post print clean up, so ideally, no supports. If the item object is made with the laser cutter I may create something layered that requires light gluing at the end.
For a mass produced object I think the more complete the object from machine intervention the better. This would be more time and cost affective.
Inspired by this design, the first path of interest is to make a funky 3D printed cubby/side table.

Sketch exploration : Visualize it as though we are looking straight on as a linear perspective. The orange lines are the edges of the side table, if the angle were to change we could see the surface.

I then began to move back to a more minimalist approach as I find charm in the simplicity |

The second approach I have for the project is inspired by unique bookmarks

The "tip of the iceberg" is basically the whole idea here. I like the idea of a sea monster. Classic fiction and fairytale could be a big inspiration for potential ideas. |

The tip of the bookmark would be a 3D object while the inserted section would be flat |

The main difference between I see between these two ideas has to be that the side table is almost entirely function based while the bookmark is a component for story telling. I'm really not sure which I will go with.
